THE STOLEN CAPITALS OF VILLA ADRIANA

Since the Middle Ages the most precious materials such as columns and capitals were removed from Villa Adriana to be reused in the churches and palaces of nearby Tivoli.

In the façade of the Boschi-Del Re palace, in the Piazza Palatina of Tivoli, columns, capitals and marbles have been inserted, which certainly come from Villa Adriana.
We know that for sure because one of them is a unique example, with spear-shaped leaves, identical to others seen in the Imperial Triclinium.

A fragment of a Doric frieze can be seen on the façade of the same building. It too comes from Villa Adriana, from the Hall with Doric Pillars, where there still is a much better preserved section with triglyphs and metopes.

As everyone knows, in the warehouses and deposits of archaeological sites there are hidden treasures that no one can see.
In those of the Hundred Chambers of Villa Adriana there are some magnificent pilasters, already photographed at the end of the 19th century by the French scholar Pierre Gusman.
One of them has small Ionic volutes, a central palmette and a garland of fruits. The other has leaves, scrolls and a central palmette flower.

These splendid marbles are all unique pieces, created exclusively for the emperor. They give an idea of the refinement of the decoration of his Villa, which took care of the smallest details. There was an inexhaustible repertoire of imagination and creativity, from which Renaissance artists and architects drew inspiration for their projects.

They give an idea of the art and beauty that enlivened in the Villa, whose decoration has unfortunately been largely lost.
