21 - OUTER PERISTYLE

Description
This large portico has never been excavated or studied in detail; it is rectangular with rounded corners.

Its west perimeter wall had a row of alternating semicircular and rectangular niches, and adjoins portico PI28 of the Imperial Palace.
At the two ends are two squared rooms arranged as a nymphaeum with traces of blue color that can still be seen today. They were described by Gusman in 1904.

On the north side of the portico three quadrangular rooms open, and in the corner there is a circular latrine with several seats.

There are few traces of the southern perimeter wall, towards the Terrace of Piazza d'Oro.
On the south side, finally, there was a corridor that led to the Golden Square.

Function and Meaning
A large decorative garden that filled the area between the Imperial Palace and the Terrace of the Golden Square. It belonged to the imperial quarters of the Villa.
