27 - TERRACE OF THE MARITIME THEATER Description
It is an artificial terrace located in front of the Maritime Theater and delimited by a retaining wall which is the continuation of that of the Upper Terrace of the Libraries.
It is accessed via a small staircase in the north angle, which was a mandatory and monitored access point.
Another staircase on the opposite side, goes to the Upper Terrace of the Libraries.
The Nymphaeum in the Terrace of the Maritime Theater
Opposite the entrance of the Maritime Theater is a Nymphaeum with a fountain with a central rectangular niche where some statues must have been placed.
Function and meaning
Private and supervised access to the Maritime Theatre, which separates the public area of the Villa (Poecile and Hall of the Philosophers) from the private one reserved for the emperor.
