34 - HANGING GARDEN
Description
Between the upper floor of the Winter Palace and the stair that goes up to the Praetorium Panoramic Pavilion there is a long wall built in opus mixtum that connected the two buildings.
It was originally a portico in front of which a large hanging garden extends: it overlooks the panorama towards the Great and Small Baths
It was never excavated nor described, and nothing is known about its decoration.

Function and meaning
It served to directly connect the upper floor of the building with the Peschiera and the Panoramic Pavilion of the Pretorio, both located on a higher level, with a covered and sheltered portico.
It was also a panoramic walk, a Hanging Garden from which one could enjoy the view of the landscape.
The same connection between the two buildings existed on the lower level, through the Cryptoporticus of the Great Baths.

The holes for the nails prove that the walls were covered with marble and therefore the Hanging Garden belonged to the noble and imperial quarters of the Villa.
This is confirmed by the panoramic view and by the fact that it connected two noble buildings.
