Part 9 - Gardens and Nymphaea

An overall study of the subject is missing.

We can imagine large garden areas, interposed between the various buildings, but nothing is known of their vegetation, because the antiquarian excavations ignored the gardens [whose study is a relatively recent branch of archeology].

One of the most mysterious spots of te Villa, surely a garden and nymphaeum is the Grotto of Inferi (Underworld) [FIG. 14].

A mention about gardens in Grimal [1969] and some articles by Jashemski and Salza Prina Ricotti [1987 and 1992], by Salza Prina Ricotti [1998, 2000], Adembri 2006.
Lavagne [1988] and Neuerburg [1965] study the nymphaea which were part of the gardens.

The excavation on the Antinoeion was one of the few where the traces of plants were studied, finding the pollen of palm trees [Mari 2006].
