XXVIII-748 pp., 12 ill. col., 52 ill. b/n, 64 tav. - Brossura, 21,5 x 28 cm - 109 piante - Bibliotheca Archaeologica, 09 - L'Erma di Bretschneider, 1991
The first systematic catalogue of the Villa Adriana, with chapters dedicated to single buildings, summarizing the history of the excavations, studies and restorations. Each room has a catalogue entry, listing the building technique, decoration, the state of preservation and restorations, the function, the waterworks and heating systems. The book also studies the function of the buildings, starting from the decorative hierarchies that allow us to identify a noble area reserved for the Emperor, a secondary zone for the high ranking personnel and a third service area for slaves, mostly set underground.
The book is the first inventory of opus sectile floors, mosaics and other decorations of the Villa, visible in all rooms and buildings that were accessible at that time (1980’s). It also has a list of the remains of wall paintings and of the sculptures found in each building.
